Here's this week's challenge. I'm working this new theme for a while. It's fun and I can use more cryptic terms. Though with this crew I doubt it will take long. Still it's fun to have a new fellow to talk about. Best of luck!
With a mind like his it is no wonder,
That he did toss whole ships asunder,
And thwart whole armies with wheels and rope,
To give a fortress days of hope.
Yet through stealthy acts the walls were breached,
And inside the fortress, the enemy reached,
They found him pondering dusty glyphs,
And commanded, “come,” though he stayed stiff.
Transfixed by what his mind had conjured,
He hushed them wait ‘til he discovered,
The answer to his diagram,
But an impatient sword, through him ran.
1. Who was he?
2. What is his most famous utterance?
3. What did he have placed upon his tomb?
Please e-mail in your answers. The game is played until we get three winners (first, second and third)

Dude, are you gonna let your lovely wife play this time? I mean, ferchrissakes, it's your wife! How smart can she really be? What do you fear? Man. I'm not gettin' it.
LOL! Anonymous. Play in my name. I am in the middle of report cards and can't spend much more time blogging than it takes to visit a few favorite places each day.
Tom, if this is still up come Saturday afternoon, I'll give third place a shot.
I see that cheeky 'anonymous' is at it again. Can't you do anything about her. (uh, I mean him or whatever) :)
No worries, QD, I'm that way for at least three days a week which is why I post so seldom. I will miss you being the one to beat though.
Jackie, I don't see any comment from anonymous. What are you talking about?
Tom, my deadline to have my report cards to my supervisor is 3:30 Friday. Then I'm headed for the gym. When I get home, I'll give your info a google.
Hey, Tom -- I'm a finalist in Sar's caption contest. Pop by now and vote for me!
Me, Tom. Me! Me! Me! Vote for me at Sar's. Look in the sidebar for the caption contest.
Are you trying to out shameless me on my own blog? You crazy woman. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer they say-- on guard!
I always take your challenge seriously Tom, in that I give time to it, but there comes a point when, you have to say, no more, and that point has arrived.
No worries Bazz, With QD busy grading and Goldennib writing a novel, the usual pace has fallen off. When I started doing this, my challenges were over in minutes, then went to hours, then maybe a day and with this one going on two days it got me worried. I've just been spoiled, I think.

Tom, I'm not even going to START looking for the answer to this one I don't know....because if I started, I would NOT stop until I found it....and I want to go play instead. But I've promised myself I'll do the next one!!
Perhaps a clue might encourage?
Clues are waiting in the wings and will be posted Saturday.
Cheers,
Tom
I'm stumped, but haven't given up just yet.
Tom, your challenges are too difficult for me.
Oh woe!
Well thanks for taking a look, jenn and Egan (though it sounds like Egan is still going for it). We do have a winner but as such is the case, this person knew the story put into verse. Looking for second and third place. I can tell you this: It is a famous name, the utterance is a household exclamation. The tomb thing is more ambiguous but shows up in most bios of any length, so once you get his name, the rest falls into place.
Oh darn.
Household exclaimation. I still haven't got it then! Yikes. Back to Google.
Still looking for third place...
Tom, if ONLY I could get T to do these things on the blogs! I said I wasn't going to play - but felt bad when no one was playing - so decided to go look. I didn't even know where to begin! And good job on your poem (they're good by the way) but NOTHING I was googling was bringing up anything. T gets a little tired of seeing me on here and this a.m. he was watching me and ask why I was researching these weird things. I read him your poem....and he immediately gave me the quote! He's good!!
Well that was a good idea off of the top of his head I must say. Unfortunately I must also say that the answers given were wrong. The attackers were Roman, as the clue makes clear. However those defending the armies with such magic were not. Here's another rub for T: this guy would be probably be considered the first celebrated mechanical engineer!
Dang it!
I know this one
email on its way,
I gotta get over here more often!
